Back to Basics: Learning Forehand Fundamentals (Lefty)
I realised I didn't get a good racket drop because my arm was too stiff
Wow instant subscribe, incredible video. I was just analyzing some 4.0 VS 4.5/5.0 usta videos to see what I was missing. The biggest thing I felt was how precise they are with their footwork, so then I got to this video. I cant wait to put this into practice.
This may be the best serve video I've ever seen. So many little details that just aren't talked about, and presented in such a clear manner. Thank you Tom. I will be sharing this. Keep them coming.
I think the right answer is pulling.
Opposite
@@TomAllsopp I don't know for sure, but pulling is more stable than hitting the ball. thank youl
@user-wx2nm2hi5p very stable. Rigid
Danny bishop special ❤
Maybe due to my bad English I didn’t explain well. Elbow and wrist moove but do not rotate. So you moove your racquet only by dominant shoulder and using yr legs…
Tom u are actualy keep your angled arm still and mooving it only by mooving your shoulder forward and of course using your legs. Elbow and wrist remain still…
Correct. But I’m saying move your arm because if you say use your shoulder people rotate the shoulders
@@TomAllsopp Yeah, it may be confusing for rec players. Racquet head behind the comming ball, dominant shoulder forward together with legs pattern (nicely explained in one of yr previous videos)… All the best
@zorantolic7142 you don’t want dominant shoulder forward. Opposite
@@TomAllsopp Misunderstanding. U r saying move yr arm and I am adding by moving yr shoulder forward. I think it’s just a small difference in aproaching the student. A tip with a shoulder movement helped me and it doesn’t mean it will help someone else 🙂
While other two joints (elbow and wrist) remain still…
Im just a recreational player. My FH grip is Semi western but not to far from Semi eastern. I use full eastern when its a high ball with no momentum and decided to use a FH. Full Eastern to continental is usefull for high balls for me Imo
My first grip was Semi eastern to full eastern. i think this helped me a lot. I adjusted to semi western ( not to far from semi eastern) to get more spin
I am dealing with a shoulder injury and play 1st doubles. I have 3 days to practice this serve before my match. Hopefully, I get as consistent as you, probably not as much spin. Thank you for this alternative to the overhand serve.
Excellent video! Thank you so much for all your great tips
here I am again ... this is your video... and you state "throw it" .. right .. how do you throw the ball ... wrist action included ;).
Supinating and probating the forearm
@@TomAllsopp yes .. pronating :)... I know .. and in my comment to the other poster; if you tie a splint to the back of your hand, that will guarantee no flexion/snap. I bet your serve will be totally different. Just my thoughts...
@@samsno3667 it won’t be. As long I get 5 degree flexion I’m good
Love the video. Looks like your toss is relatively low and begins at waist level. The finish looks like a slice rather than a flat serve.
also besides coming up , under and over the ball, you're also relying of a "wrist snap" to generate pace and spin which some call "flexon" of the wrist and not a "snap". It's a wrist snap... at the end and follow through.
I have zero wrist flexion though
@@TomAllsopp really... I can see the motion that your wrist is following through and coming from the downward location of the wrist and coming up over. I'm also an instructor and my point is if there is no "flexion"... then you're hitting a "volley" and you can generate that much pop with a straight wrist. Maybe I'm describing it "wrong"...
@@TomAllsopp and looking at one of your older video of the serve .. you're pronating with the wrist "snap"... so you're "flexion"... .. I'm just saying. Cheers...
@@samsno3667 nope. My wrist doesn’t move like that. Fact
@@TomAllsopp I can actually see it but hey.. I'm describing the fact when you drop the racquet head and then come up and the pronate; guess what .. that's a snap in my mind and physiologically speaking. The dropped point (lowest poitnt) and then as you come up to pronate... that's "snapping". Nonetheless anytime the wrst is flexed/bent and then you straighten out the wrist at contact... that's a "snap"... anyways.. your video.. it's cool.
That was very helpful .. Thank you
pure balance
Hi Tom. I serve with an Eastern grip and I can get crazy spin. I can't understand why people say you have to use chopper to get spin..? I stand sideways on like Johnny Mac which came about by accident as I struggled with chopper. My grip feels much stronger serving with the Eastern than with chopper - although for volleys chopper feels stronger. I'm a bit confused really :)
Thank you for the video. You are definitely the best serve instructor I have found online.
more of the older players please
I needed this video. Big time.
This is huge A in ABC of serving 🎉
are those reebok pump-it-ups? where's the discount code for those?
my thoughts exactly
This is great. I feel like I’m struggling with my entire body rotating around the spine axis
Great video Tom! I discovered the benefits of body rotation on my own and was amazed how much it added to the rhythm of the whole motion
FINALLY ON RUclips a video that doesn't just focus on shoulders, elbow or legs flexion which actually doesn't come first in the kinetic chain. If one focuses first on forward weight shift and hips rotation, the serve becomes much easier and constant.
Good explanation. There's no question that rotation plays a huge role...it acts like a Force Multiplier just like the shoulder over shoulder is an another Force Multiplier that gives your arm additional acceleration. Pete Sampras was a great example of both rotational moves...he had his back to the target and his left cheek was well into the court just prior to contact guaranteeing that rotation from 2 different sources. Rotation is so key on the serve as well as on groundstrokes...it explains why small kids well under 100lbs are able to hit powerful forehands and backhands without really having that much strength.
Good stuff bro. I dig your channel
Great instruction Tom. I've got even more to work on.

nice shoes :)
Great video! Good advice. Body rotation is crucial for good serve.
I’ve tried the Rybakina take back as well as the ATP style with the elbow raised and head pointed more forward in order to whip the racket head faster and the quality of shot is better with the take back you show. I think it keeps you more focused on the incoming ball forcing you to time the contact.
I have the same problems with my backhand. I feel something is preventing me from rotating my shoulders into the shot. I would be happy to hit my backhand like you.
95% of people I play with use continental grip.
How old are you?
@@TomAllsopp senior
great lesson , when i play i tell myself "CATCH - RELEASE"" .. eg CATCH the ball with my left hand for distance and unit turn and then RELEASE as if the racket was being released from hand and flying away -- that's all good but then there's timing which i'm crap at. WOO!
What?

Your grip is way too small - your pointer finger shouldn't be touching the base of your thumb.
It’s the same size Nadal uses, so I think I’ll be ok with this.
@TomAllsopp Nadal is known to use an unusually small grip that he never sized up from when he was a child, so that's a weird way to size your grip.
@@joek5078the pointer finger isn’t even close to touching the base of the thumb. My grip size is fine. And why would mentioning that a pro has the same grip as me be weird? It shows it’s not that important.
@TomAllsopp OK, your middle finger is touching the base of your thumb. It can be important - too small of grip size can cause hand and arm problems. You can use whatever you want for yourself, but considering you're showing in a public youtube video an aspect of proper grip, demonstrating a different aspect that is certainly not considered best practice could hurt more players than it helps.
@@joek5078 it really doesn’t matter for what I’m talking about. This is about the heel being on the top of the racket. People can use whatever size grip feels comfortable for them.
Yes, it is a good idea for beginners, which have problems with modern topspin grips.
Not just for beginners
brilliant
Nick kyrious was a master forehand pronator.
Eastern all way like fed
Thanks for the video.
I am amazed how my strokes have improved since using the continental grip. Thanks for the reinforcement.
This video is for beginners. That should be stated at the beginning. EVERY advanced player knows when/how/where to use a Continental grip.
This is false. Firstly, there's not just beginners and advanced players is there? I coach many 4.0 USTA players and high-level junior players who can't use continental. Also, I have college players who can't feed properly because they can't hit with this grip, and it's not a surprise to me that they don't have much feel.
@@TomAllsopp 4.0 isn't advanced. D1 can't hit with C grip? How do they serve, volley, slice? Not sure which college players you're dealing with.
@@luckyuliveHI Exactly, 4.0 isn't beginner or advanced. The college players serve with continental. Good job missing every point
@@TomAllsopp yea, agreed, i missed every point since you didn't make a valid one.
@luckyuliveHI sorry you weren’t able to understand. Try reading some of the comments. That should help.
Passing into the wind😂
L platform serve pinpoint better
Everyone should learn the serve from a platform stance
Interesting. I was always taught that the left side drives the power by pulling down/away. But you're saying power comes from the right side.
don't agree.. I like your videos generally but this time I disagree .. Continental FH grip? .. just for beginners or low level players .. Best regards!
You missed the point. I never said that
@@TomAllsopp Thank you for your reply, Tom! .. But the title is misleading then .. and I get your idea but you can say just Continental grip, not FH continental grip .. as CG can be used for volleys, service, slice but to use it for FH is not relevant, for me, and as I understand, for you as well
@user-rl6vc8vp4b you should be able to hit a forehand with one. What about feeding a ball in with a continental grip. If you can’t do it you should figure it out
i learned in the 80s (from vhs tapes!) and i use an eastern FH grip, but i always developed a slice forehand with a continental grip to "chip and charge" for short shots and for doubles. since i've been playing more, i've moved towards the semi-western FH grip to deal with my son's full western topspin shots (and all his friends hit the same way), but i've started to use the continental grip for returning big first serves since it allows me to chip from either side and it's been very effective. for second serves, i can go back to adjusting my grip to hit with more topspin, but the chip return has really been working for me and it throws the server off a little bit when the ball comes back so low.
(1) I can shadow swing it correctly and achieve a racquet drop. But when I toss the ball, I open up the racquet face and lose the racquet drop. (2) I will try hitting with the edge. If I can hit it with the edge that means I am almost certainly dropping it correctly and swinging up correctly.
I agree.....You need to be able to kinda scoop ball back, or shovel it deep .....not to mention try hitting a drop shot with a western grip....This is tennis 101
